The Essence

Reading is viewed as the task of recovering information from a written code. The child should not merely sequentially voice the letters, but determine which familiar word and meaning correspond to the writing.

Letters, syllables, and other parts of a word are decoding tools. For familiar words, the end state should be the rapid recognition of the spelling; for unfamiliar words, the ability to break down the code into known elements is preserved.

Information Entities

The methodology distinguishes several representations of the same content:

  • an object or situation;
  • a concept and meaning;
  • a visual image;
  • a spoken word;
  • the sound of a word;
  • a written word;
  • letters and larger structural parts of a word.

For an adult, these forms are closely linked. For a child, some of these links may be missing. Therefore, the system must first figure out what is already known and only then build up the missing connections. The Decoding Principle

If a child recognizes an image and knows its name, this is already a reliable anchor. The system can provide the sound, show the spelling, and allow the child to explore which elements of the written code repeat in other known pairs.

Thus, a new rule does not necessarily have to be stated as a ready-made fact: the child can discover it through known correspondences. This mechanism is established in «Learning to read should go from known anchors to the unknown code».

Vocabulary as a Condition for Recognition

At an early stage, it is desirable to use words that already exist in the child's oral speech and have meaning for them. Then, after decoding, recognition and internal verification of the result occur. If a word is unknown, reading easily turns into meaningless sound production. Word Structure

As development progresses, the child should see not only individual letters, but also larger familiar fragments. This is especially important for long and compound words. The approach is revealed in «A long word must be revealed through familiar structural parts».

Removing Anchors

At the beginning, the image, sound, and spelling can be given simultaneously. Then the familiar channels are gradually hidden, and the child restores the missing element using the remaining ones. Current State

The project is at the Idea stage. The theoretical model is formed at the level of basic principles and information entities. Six interconnected concepts have been defined, describing the ultimate goal of reading, the structure of representations, the decoding mechanism, the role of vocabulary, the structural analysis of words, and the gradual removal of prompts.

A specific sequence of screens and MVP tasks has not yet been fixed, a formal dependency graph between words and letters has not been built, and practical testing on children has not been conducted.

Next Testable Hypothesis

If an interactive system starts with images and spoken words already familiar to the child, and then gradually reveals the spelling and its repeating elements, the child will be able to more quickly connect the written form to the familiar word and use the mastered elements to decode previously unseen words.

The key criterion for future testing is transfer to unfamiliar examples, rather than just successful recognition of already shown words.
