Reading is word recognition and meaning recovery, not sequential letter sounding

Connected to the main concept «uchitsya-legko.rf — learning to read as decoding a written code».

A fluent reader does not need to sequentially assemble a word from letters every time. Familiar spelling functions as a stable visual pattern that quickly activates the spoken word and its meaning.

Hence, two operations must be distinguished:

  1. decoding — recovering an unknown word from the elements of the written code;
  2. recognition — identifying an already familiar word by its written image.

If a child, after being given a hint, once again painfully sounds out the same word, it means that knowledge of the spoken word in itself has not yet created a stable connection with the spelling. Therefore, after successful decoding, repeated recognition must be formed, rather than merely demanding the execution of the same algorithm again.

This idea is based on the model of different representations of the same content: «The written word connects several representations of the same content».

In practice, recognition develops through the gradual removal of hints: «Hints must gradually disappear as connections are mastered».

Decoding remains necessary for unfamiliar words. Its effectiveness depends on already known sound, letter, and structural elements, and for long words — on the ability to see familiar parts: «A long word must be revealed through familiar structural parts».
