A selling interface is not a salesperson
A selling interface is not a salesperson
This concept clarifies the key boundary within the AI salesperson commercial website model.
A commercial website can sell very well without a salesperson. A landing page, product card, quiz, personalization, recommendations, social proof, and checkout can significantly change conversion. But all of this still belongs to the retail space.
A salesperson appears only where there is a separate active loop of interaction with a specific person.
An interface predetermines behavioral options. Even a complex algorithm usually decides what to show. A salesperson operates differently:
observation → hypothesis → question or action → buyer's response → updating understanding → new action.
If the buyer provides new information, the salesperson is able to change strategy, abandon a previous recommendation, explain a tradeoff, verify a doubt, and continue the interaction.
This is precisely why an AI agent can take on the role of a salesperson, while a regular recommendation system remains digital merchandising.
Historically, this boundary was less noticeable because the commercial website evolved as a self-service system built on incoming demand.
Once a salesperson appears inside the website, the next step is to determine what specific salesperson is needed for a particular retail situation. This is explored in the typology of four commercial websites and the four salesperson archetypes.
Return to the big picture: AI salesperson changes the nature of the commercial website.
