From Words to Phrases and Vietnamese Improvisation

From Words to Phrases and Vietnamese Improvisation

The goal of the course is not to accumulate a passive vocabulary, but rather to develop an early ability to independently assemble new phrases from already known elements.

The Word as a Building Block

For example, after being introduced to uống "to drink", the learner should not only recognize it, but also use it in various contexts: uống nước, uống cà phê, and combine it with desires, negations, and questions.

Thus, a single word turns into a hub for a large number of combinations.

Productive Frameworks

At the start, the following constructions are especially useful:

  • subject + action + object;
  • không + predicate — negation;
  • muốn + action/object — desire;
  • có ... không? — general question;
  • questions with , ai, đâu, bao nhiêu, etc.;
  • noun + attribute;
  • simple aspectual-temporal markers as needed.

Instead of memorizing hundreds of ready-made phrases, the student sees what can be replaced within a construction while preserving its framework.

Do Not Translate Ready-Made Russian Sentences

The desired route over time is: situation/meaning → Vietnamese construction, rather than "first fully formulate in Russian → translate".

Improvisation Begins Early

Even a small vocabulary allows one to combine familiar elements. Therefore, tasks should quickly transition from repeating a model to changing a single element, and then to independently assembling a phrase based on a meaningful situation.
