Dialects and pronunciation variants of the Vietnamese language
For learning, one cannot assume that there is a single, completely uniform pronunciation.
Main regional zones
In practice, the northern variant (especially Hanoi) and the southern variant (primarily Ho Chi Minh City speech) are most often contrasted; central variants also have their own distinct features.
Where differences are especially noticeable
- realization of certain tones;
d,gi,r;v;- differences in
s/x,tr/chacross regional norms; - individual finals and vowels;
- part of the everyday vocabulary.
In the northern norm, six tones are typically described; in southern speech, hỏi and ngã merge or become very similar for many speakers.
Methodological conclusion
At the start, it is advisable to choose one variant as the active pronunciation model, but gradually learn to recognize other variants. For a primer, it is reasonable to use the Hanoi system as a base map and explicitly note southern discrepancies where they are important for understanding real speech.
