Kilfor — modernization of a legacy MODX project

We are launching a technical upgrade of the website kilfor.ru.

This is an older yet still active project built on MODX. However, this is not just a corporate website: behind the public-facing part lies an internal business center system with applied logic that continues to be used in real-world operations.

The system handles processes related to pass requests, vehicle entry, utilities, and other internal functions. Therefore, the goal of the project is not to replace everything at once, but rather to update the public interface without disrupting what is already working.

At the first stage, a new frontend using modern technologies will be created for kilfor.ru, while the existing MODX will remain on the backend and continue to support the accumulated business logic.

This aligns with the Headless MODX approach: MODX is retained as a working internal system, but ceases to dictate the structure of the website's public interface.

The main goal of this stage is to lift the limitations of the old frontend and deliver a modern public-facing part that can be further developed independently of the project's historical architecture. This will make it possible to work separately on the presentation of the facility, the site structure, user scenarios, and new features without having to touch the existing backend system every time.

A complete replacement of MODX is not the objective of the project at this time. The system already contains a large volume of functioning applied logic, and rewriting it solely for the sake of a technological update makes no sense. In such cases, it is much more important to preserve the working system and gradually phase out the legacy parts that truly hinder further development.

This is precisely why the modernization is being carried out in phases, following the logic of gradual migration: new parts are built alongside the old ones, and the existing system continues to operate until it truly makes sense to replace its individual components.

The project also has a long technical history. The foundation of the internal system was originally developed back in 2009 for the business center at 21 Novy Arbat. In 2016, a copy of this system was deployed at the facility then known as Kvant-N, which operates today under the Kilfor brand.

In essence, the current website and internal system have been running at this facility since 2016. The user account area, the logic for pass and vehicle entry requests, as well as utility-related functions, have been stably in use all these years.

In other words, we are currently dealing with a system that has gone through many years of real-world operation and still remains part of the active infrastructure. Therefore, its further development is particularly interesting as an example of modernization without discarding accumulated value.

At the current stage, the main focus of work is a new public frontend for kilfor.ru while keeping the existing MODX on the backend. Going forward, as the project evolves, it will become clear which other parts of the system are worth extracting from the legacy code and in what order to do so.

This concept will reflect the current state of the project: what has already been done, what is currently being worked on, what decisions have been made, what stages are planned next, and what interesting cases emerge along the way during the modernization.
